Coworking Marketing #71 - Be the Coworking Space AI Recommends (Part 2)

When AI tools answer questions using your space name, they pull the info from your website. Semrush found that half of the links in ChatGPT responses point to business and service websites.

But discovery questions are different. When someone asks "best coworking for freelancers in this city" – no name attached – the models build a shortlist from third-party sources: reviews, directories, mentions. That's where you either make the cut or don't.

You need both working. Part 1 covered the first half – your website, your Business Profile, the credibility you control. This edition covers the second: credibility from third-party sources.

Where the third-party signals come from

AI models cite what other credible sources say about you.

A collection of various logos, including those of LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, etc.

That means:

Reddit and LinkedIn – communities AI models weigh heavily. A thread where someone recommends your space is worth more than a paragraph you wrote about yourself.
Podcast mentions and editorial coverage – a guest spot on an established coworking industry podcast like the Coworking Values Podcast or a mention in a dedicated coworking publication like Coworker Mag gives AI an independent, trusted source to draw from.
YouTube – now the most-cited site in Google's AI Overviews. A three-minute space tour, a member spotlight, a founder Q&A – each of these gives AI transcripts to pull from
"Best coworking in [city]" lists – get on them. Reach out to local publications and city bloggers when you're confident you have something worth including.

One note on earning these: Google's AI optimization guide warns against chasing inauthentic mentions, saying its systems focus on quality and actively filter manufactured signals. The move isn't to spam bloggers for links. It's to be worth talking about – then make sure the people already talking about you can find accurate info.

Check if AI actually recommends you

You can't manage what you don't measure. Once a month, spend fifteen minutes testing it yourself.

Start a fresh chat in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, and run the same queries in Google (in an incognito window) to see the AI Overview. Ask the questions your ideal member would ask:

Best coworking space in [your neighborhood]
Coworking with day passes in [city]
Quiet coworking for writers in [city]
Coworking with meeting rooms for small teams

Note which spaces get named, in what order, and what the AI says about them. Run it across a few months – answers shift between sessions, so track trends, not single results.

If you're never named, look at who is, and read what exists online about them that doesn't yet exist about you. That gap is your to-do list.

What to skip

The GEO space is loud with vendor hype right now. Cut through the noise:

Skip paid llms.txt services. Google's AI optimization guide states outright that Google Search ignores llms.txt files. It's harmless to have, not worth paying for.
Skip anyone promising guaranteed AI citations. Nobody can guarantee this.
Skip the "write 200 pages for every long-tail query" advice – Google's scaled content abuse policy specifically punishes it, and AI models see through it too.
Skip paid AI-visibility audits until you've done the free monthly check yourself. Most of what they'd flag, you can fix in an afternoon.

The takeaway

AI recommends spaces that are clearly described on their own site and independently confirmed everywhere else. Your website earns the answer when someone asks about you by name. Reviews, directories, and honest third-party mentions earn you the answer when nobody's asked for you yet.

The monthly check is where this turns from reading into doing. Start this week.
